Oil-Based vs. Water-Based Hair Care
Most hair serums are water-based. Folicare is intentionally oil-based — and that's a deliberate choice. Here's the real difference, why we started with oil, and what's coming next.
The difference, plainly
A serum's base changes how it feels, where it works, and how you use it. Neither is universally "better" — they're built for different routines. Here's an honest side-by-side.
Oil-based serum
- Stays on the scalp as a leave-on layer — no rinsing.
- Carries botanical oils (rosemary, castor, jojoba, coconut) where you apply them.
- Rosemary oil — a botanical traditionally valued for its natural DHT-blocking property.
- Supports the scalp biome and doubles as split-end care on lengths and ends.
- Best for a low-maintenance daily scalp ritual.
Water-based serum
- Lighter, faster-absorbing feel.
- Layers easily under styling on busy mornings.
- Preferred by people who dislike any oil texture.
- Suits fine hair that weighs down quickly.

Why we started with oil
We didn't pick oil-based by accident. For the majority of people focused on scalp health and thinning-looking areas, an oil base is the more effective delivery format for the botanicals that do the work — so we built that first, and built it properly.
It stays where it matters
A leave-on oil keeps rosemary and supporting botanicals in contact with the scalp instead of rinsing away in seconds.
It supports the scalp biome
The oil blend is designed to support a comfortable, balanced scalp environment — the foundation of healthier-looking hair.
It earns its place in a routine
One step, once a day, no rinse. For most people that's the routine they'll actually stick with — and consistency is what matters.
Folicare is cosmetic hair care that supports the look and feel of your hair — not a medical treatment, diagnosis or cure. Results vary from person to person.
